Roman theatre

Open access • Free • Follow the road past the post office for about 300m until you reach the army barracks – the site stands just to the left, inside the outer gate

There are some impressive remains of a Roman theatre at the northeast end of the town. With most of its stone seats intact, and 50m in diameter, the theatre illustrates perfectly how buildings in Greece take on different guises through the ages: to one side is a Byzantine church (now ruined) which, in turn, functions as an outer wall of the barracks.

By bus The bus station (27330 22228) is close to the centre of town; with your back to it, the main waterfront street, Vassiléos Pávlou, lies ahead of you.

Destinations Athens (5 daily; 4hr via Corinth); Kalamáta (Taxi to Miliá; 50min then bus; 2 weekly; 1hr); Spárti (Taxi to Krokeés; 20 mins then bus; 2 daily; 40min).

Finding accommodation shouldn’t be hard, with a fair range in town – most hotels are along the waterfront, though some suffer from late-night noise from the many bars.

Aktaion Resort Selinitsa beach, 3.5km north of the centre; http://aktaion-resort.com. Rooms and stone-built bungalows in a spacious luxury resort in the middle of a large fruit grove. There are two pools, a pool bar and great beach, plus sea views from balconies throughout. Breakfast included. June–Sept. Double €€, bungalow. €€

Gythion Bay Camping near Yíthio; https://gythiocamping.gr/. A very pleasant campground, Gythion Bay offers a range of amenities, including a pool, beach bar, restaurant, a nice children’s play area and access to a sandy beach. Bike rental available. €

Leonidas Vassiléos Pávlou 38; 27330 22389 This unassuming hotel has an Art-Deco-style entrance and spartan rooms, which nevertheless have a/c: most also have balconies with sea views. A great comfortable and cheaper alternative. €

Meltemi Mavrovoúni beach, 3km from Yíthio; http://campingmeltemi.gr. Nestled in a 25-acre olive grove, this large campsite faces a broad swathe of beach and clean sea. Facilities include a pool, minimarket, restaurant, washing machines and dryers, plus free wi-fi. April–Nov. €

YeeOn Vassiléos Pávlou 33; http://yeeonhotel.com/. A fine old (1864) building, now a bespoke boutique hotel with period decorated rooms, even the unique Cave Room with direct access to the indoor pool. All rooms have sea views, there’s a hammam and the all-day bistro –where breakfast (extra cost) is made using locally sourced produce. €€€

Saga Tzanetáki; 27330 21358. Above-average (and pricey) fish taverna overlooking the Marathoníssi islet. Run by a friendly, knowledgeable French–Greek family, choose your fish from the ice bucket knowing it arrived the same day, and be sure to try the fish soup as a starter. €€

Trata Tzanetáki; 27330 24429. Located along the seafront with outdoor seating, expect local Maniot dishes such as spaghetti with mizithra (a whey cheese from sheep or goats) and all products are sourced locally. €–€€
